Did you do any of the side missions before that point? They’re pretty open ended as far as how you approach them. I did one to kill a Tyger member. It’s in a pretty small area, but the combination of stealth, hacking, and fighting is super seamless. Even in the heist you’re talking about, once the building is on lock down it’s pretty open as to how you escape. Sure, there’s a set path, but you can stealth through it and take the guards out one by one, you can hack stuff to distract them and sneak around them, or you can just shoot your way out.

I did one… where I had to confront a cop. I'll admit, it was cool to have her draw her gun on me with me still in control telling me to freeze. Would she shoot me if I move? It was all happening 'in game' as I had to talk her down.

But the side quest system is just… bad. Rather than get them by exploring the world and uncovering things myself, you just open your journal for a list of them that are out of nowhere?!
