And you can preview individual items from their inspect or your whole guardian if you do it from the inventory.

I've found some colors that I like, but still haven't applied them, since it wouldn't look good with the shaders on other pieces of armor that I have... Fortunately, you seem to get the shaders in stacks (I haven't seen one drop in less than a stack of three). If you buy the 900 Silver bundle (thanks, Cyber!), you get a stack of ten really awesome Suros-themed shaders, and I have no idea where more of those drop, so I'm terrified of using it, even though it looks great on my Blue/silver-themed chestpiece:
