If you needed 1 shader per item, but that one wasn't lost the moment you used it, I'd be okay with this, but the fact that getting a shader from the vanilla raid to use on an item from xpac 2's raid means you have to run the vanilla raid all over again... that's lame. We should be able to take the shader off of item X and put it onto item Y. I'm fine with needing to earn a 2nd shader in order to put one on X and Y at the same time.

This seems both more complicated then it needs to be, and creates the same problem in the solution. In a way, this idea is "unlocking" the shaders on a gun. By "investing" into the gun, it is now an object to hoard, because you put time into that object.

Unless... unless it can't be deleted, and if you shard something it just gets added back into your pool. Which, reading you post again, is basically what you are saying. Meh. Why are we restricting the number of shaders again? Gameplay-carrot-on-a-stick was it? Ugh.

This feels so silly to me right now.
