just be glad you're not a new player (Destiny)

the TTK economy was built to slow down Year 1 people that have amassed huge amounts of materials and various currencies. Someone starting from scratch (I'm talking about brand new to destiny, not creating a alt and having access to a shared inventory) is going to have a major uphill battle.

They have no weapons/armor parts

They have no exotic shards to level up or infuse the exotics that drop.

Bounties are worth less EXP/Rep (although easier to complete)

Takes longer to level up factions/vanguard, and you don't get reward packages until after rank 3.

They don't have a stash of motes of light to boost gear/faction

they don't have ascendant materials to trade for motes

they don't have legendary marks, and will take some time to get prepared for the activities that grant them

Ranking up queen's rep to get the Taken War: Petra quest will take months with the current state of the weekly bounties

Normally I would agree with you, except I have a buddy that just recently started after TTK and has a higher light level than me. And he only has one character. And now he hasn't put more hours in than me. Maybe more hours in TTK than me but not overall. That alone speaks to the fact that TTK is easier to level in.
