But it seem's that Guardians are to be found only in the Tower. Who then the population of the Last City? Surely survivors.

My impression is that humanity was in fact wiped from Earth, hence the armed astronauts landing here (from another of our worlds) and seeing the Traveller. That was the moment of humanity's reclaiming Earth. Then the city sprung up under the protection of the Traveller. Then the task was set for Ghosts to seek out and resurrect human Guardians, and reanimate Exos, etc. (I've got no theories on the Awoken) I'm guessing we're all mighty ancient warriors that had fallen in battle and somehow can be discerned from other corpses as worthy of resurrection.

At least that's how it reads to me. The beginning of the Gameplay Experience trailer makes me think that, anyway.

If the Traveler is the Vanguard of Life like you were saying earlier, it makes sense that perching over the dead ruin of Earth, he would have sprung new life. Could it be that the Earth is unlivable for humans without the Traveler now? (I meant environmentally)

Makes plenty of sense to me.

Does that make the Darkness the Vanguard of Death?
