I've been thinking all along that the Darkness is more of a greater force opposing the light than a faction, per se. Otherwise, why would there be a distinction between the Darkness and The Hive?
Forgot to address that bit. I see the Hive as a (possibly corrupted) subject race of the force or entity(ies) that is the Darkness in a similar vein to Tolkien's Orcs and their relationship with Morgoth. It's formulaic at this stage but not unexpected and as long as it's handled properly, satisfactory.
Yep, that's where my thinking is currently at, as well.
