Familiars (Destiny)

I'm going with souls here since they've been mentioned so much in connection with Destiny. What if the chosen dead's soul is returned and bound to the "ghost"? It's common enough in mythology to have an external soul as a device to keep the hero safe.

This idea has real merit. I'm realizing as I watch streams from the Crucible that the item hanging suspended from the center of sphere when a Guardian falls is, in fact, that Guardian's ghost, which lends credence to the idea that Ghost is the keeper of the Guardian's soul.
