I don’t buy it being a problem, though. A game is all of its elements together, not just each element taken on its own.
Yes I agree. But you have situations now where the mechanics actually clash with the aesthetics to create a disconnect. I'm not talking about 'gameplay' you may find traditional or boring. I'm talking about things like showing us this vast detailed city in the sky, only to find out it's made of empty shops and people who act like pull string dolls. Nothing in the 'gameplay' of Uncharted really clashed with the aesthetics… which is why they are quite good games.
