This is so, so unreasonable.I know someone who plays games because books that talk with him don't exist. He loves stories - but his imagination isn't enough to take written words and turn them into the universe he yearns to participate in. Who the hell are you to tell him he's doing it wrong?
Then he's not doing it wrong. You just said he cares about participating i.e. interaction with the world. That's fine.
