I'm thinking it's part stay alive and part damage the boss in certain ways to slow it down / disable some of its weapons / trigger it to attempt to run you over instead of the much more dangerous shooting you to death. Finally, after doing enough damage to enough parts you finally do have to run away and jump off the wall.
