IGN has posted the latest video in their month-long coverage of Destiny, which gives a look at the way the Destiny Companion App will enhance your Destiny experience. You'll be able to swap gear in real time, view stats and mission progress, thumb through the Grimoire, and more. (Thanks, Grim III.)
Ragashingo is at it again - pulling together yet another excellent compendium of knowledge on a specific facet of Destiny's lore. What is the focus of his conjecture this time? It's the Hive! Give his forum post a read, then be sure to add your own rampant speculation to the mix.
(Thanks, uh-- Ragashingo, I guess.)
Yesterday, Ragashingo stopped in with a new Speculation Saturday - it's been more than 9 months since his last one! He's decided to look at the difference between what we knew then and what we know now... and it's a pretty interesting comparison! Give it a read, and then toss in your own two cents!
Thanks to a delightful case of West Nile (thank you, Mother Nature), I've gotten behind again on the fan fiction queue. Ragashingo's been busy, in the meantime, and has submitted three new pieces. The first, "No Longer Afraid", appeared on our forum a couple of weeks ago and follows up on one of the characters he introduced a while back. Fair warning: the ending is a wee bit... dark. (I quite liked it.) The next two, "Little Lights in the Darkness" Parts One and Two, follow the origins of a new Guardian, driven by a need to protect her sister. All are high quality reading, so go check 'em out!
Cozmo23 (who moderates the /r/destinythegame subreddit, and is part of the Tied the Leader group) put together a fantastic montage from his time in the Destiny Alpha - check it out. (Anyone who participated in the Alpha probably ran into roving bands of TTL guys - and most of us got our butts kicked, a testament to the power of team play.)
The image editing contest we ran a week ago came to a close on Monday night - but the week's been so insane that I didn't get a chance to post the winners until now. Congrats to tareheart, Ibeechu, and Schedonnardus! (I don't seem to have any way to reach Ibeechu, so hopefully he'll see this and send me details about where I can send his shirt.) Congratulations, as well, to ZackDark, who would have won, but couldn't accept the international mail without a real headache. Thanks to everyone who participated (you can scroll through the submission thread if you haven't seen all the entries), and keep your eyes open for the next DBO contest!
Pete Parsons spent a few minutes with GamesIndustry.biz at E3, discussing where Destiny came from, and where it's going. It's hard to read his answers and not feel his enthusiasm for the title. Go see! Thanks again, DaDerga.
TheReachWay and Snabobo teamed up to put together a slick Destiny Alpha montage showing off their FPS skills - and TheReachWay's video editing skills! Check out "Dawn".
If you didn't get a chance to play the Destiny Alpha (or even if you did!), several fans on our site have taken the time to write up their experiences, often including lots of screenshots. You can swing by and explore the perspectives:
While you're exploring personal opinions and screens, you might also want to poke your head into the Grimoire thread; it gives you a glimpse of some of the wealth of content you'll find outside the gameplay itself. Fascinating reading!
Gamecheat took one look at the Titan melee animation and immediately thought of the perfect song for his Destiny Alpha montage. Listen to the bass go BOOM!
One of the things we came home with after E3 was a T-shirt stash... and we want to share it with you. Bungie had a life-size Sparrow on display in the lobby of the LA Convention Center, and folks were able to take pictures riding it. mastrbiggy likes to see me humiliated, so he's come up with the following contest: Photoshop the image above (click for full-size), post the result (and your T-shirt size) on our forum, and you could win a show-specific Destiny T. (It's the same design as this Tricorn Baseball shirt, except that the shirt is grey, the design is white, and the sleeves are short.)
Ragashingo took a closer look at the beginning of the E3 Experience Trailer and posted a write-up in the forum. Go check it out and add your two cents!
Back in February, Chris Barrett tweeted a picture that showed off some very cool 8-bit avatars he'd created for the 2014 Bungie Pentathlon. kidtsunami wanted to make them more available for fan use, so he cut them out and put them on transparent backgrounds. You'll find them in his forum post.
Josh Hamrick of Bungie made note of it on his Twitter, but our local Xenos, Lord Commander of the News Watch, also discovered from Reddit what many Playstation users are starting see: Destiny will be able to be pre-loaded to your console starting September 4th.
Destiny Overwatch created wallpapers for the each of the factions in Destiny - decorate your desktop and show your allegiance!
Half a billion dollars. That's how much Reuters says Activision is putting into developing and promoting Destiny:
CEO Bobby Kotick revealed the number, which dwarfs Hollywood spending on some of its biggest firms, during the Milken conference in Los Angeles last week. A company spokesperson said on Monday the number was accurate but also included marketing, packaging, infrastructure support, royalties and other costs.
While that sounds like a huge sum of cash for a new IP, keep in mind that Destiny is planned to be a 10-year franchise:
The spokesperson added that investment in the next generation engine and a "robust backend infrastructure are upfront expenditures that should reduce future product development costs."
"Over the long term, we expect the ultimate product costs to be roughly in line with other Triple-A titles."
This just leaves one question: What's the exchange rate of dollars to glimmer? (Thanks for the heads-up, Mr Danger.)
Eurogamer has released another Destiny article - but this one looks more at the studio behind the game than at the game itself. It's a pretty interesting read, covering ground not really covered before. Bungie has been on its own before (in the 90s), and it's been wholly owned by a much bigger fish (when it was a Microsoft subsidiary), and it's now somewhere in the middle; it's beholden to Activision (simply by dint of the huge amount of cash poured into the studio from Activision coffers), but it's still its own company, capable of making decisions it couldn't make while part of Microsoft. Eurogamer tried to get a handle on how this is working - go give it a read! Credit, almost inevitably these days, goes to Xenos for the find.
Polygon has a new article up today - this one asks 10 burning questions, and then answers them. (There's also a video with a bunch of decent interviews with Bungie personnel, so explore.) Thanks, Xenos. Your check is in the mail.
PlayStation Access posted another vid - this one focuses on loot, and tells you why you'll love it. Go watch. Thanks, SigbiasSilva.
Playstation Access has a fifteen-minute Q&A with DeeJ today - lots of questions, lots of real answers. You should watch. Thanks, Xenos. (Xenos? Who IS that guy?)
