Bite-sized Backstory - Batch 7 (plus a new home)

Ragashingo's posted another three installments of his 'Bite-Sized Backstory'; follow along as Oryx punishes one offspring and receives gifts from another, fights with a Vex mind, and discovers a long-sought prize.

  1. Crota's Punishment and Oryx's Plans
  2. End of Failed Timeline
  3. The Gift Mast and Dragons?!

We've finally set up a local place to read these; if you're starting from scratch, just visit the Bite-sized Backstory page itself, but if you'd just like to read these latest three, in order, you can do that at this link.

Sideline

Stuntmutt sez:

FWC rolling in, what I believe young people refer to as, 'da Benjamins'.

(If you haven't played a lot of crucible in the past couple of weeks, you might not have noticed the new Sidearm hotness... or the near-god-roll specimen available from Lakshmi-2. The rest of us have, though.)

This Week At Bungie - 02/23/2017

Bungie's latest update has some info you probably want to take a close look at. There's a summary of the changes they're considering, based on last week's rollout of Hotfix 2.5.0.2, and some are significant. There's information about next week's Iron Banner event, this time focused on Supremacy. There's a reminder of the next Bungie Bounty, happening tomorrow on PS4. And of course, there are the standard player support notes and fan-created videos. Check it out! You can find a copy in our local archive, if you choose.

McFarlane Toys - Toy Fair Booth Visit and Interview Notes

McFarlane Figures

Unoudid stopped by with a lot of great info regarding McFarlane's upcoming line of Destiny products (shown off at the NY Toy Fair). While we should keep in mind that these are prototypes that are subject to change, it's tough to keep from getting excited about the details in everything from Lord Saladin to the life-sized (and surprisingly affordable) Iron Gjallarhorn.

Be sure to read the post (some real great insight from his talk with McFarlane's own Destiny brand manager) and then check out the photo album as well for some great shots. Thanks, Unoudid!

Edit: Unoudid also linked us to photos of Mattel's Mega Construx Destiny figures. Cabal fans should be pretty happy with that Goliath Tank!

Howlers All Round

Stuntmutt has noticed some... unhappiness in the Destiny universe this week.

THIS WEEK AT BUNGIE - 02/16/17

Bungie's weekly blog entry has a brief postmortem on the large sandbox update that went live this week.  Community reception, as always, has been mixed to say the least.  There is also some information on Bungie Bounties continuing as a weekly event going forward, and Bungie's plans to make appearances at the upcoming Emerald City Comic Con and PAX East.

After the usual Destiny Operations Center update and Movies of the Week (gotta love those "Dumb Ways to Die in Destiny montages!), the update closes with a somewhat cryptic mention of Deej heading to London to "catch up with some of the partners we work with in that corner of the world".

As always, there is a local copy here as well.

Destiny Hotfix - 2/14/17

Hotfix!Whether you're going to enjoy the day in a Fireteam of two (hope you weren't looking forward to Crimson Doubles!), or you plan to hop onto Matchmaking while enjoying a lobster thermidor for one, you're going to have to download the latest hotfix for Destiny. Hotfix 2.5.0.2 is all about tuning the sandbox and experimenting with a few unexpected changes. Say goodbye to special ammo hoarding and hello to low-RoF weapons! As always, a local copy will be available shortly.
And thanks, unoudid for the heads up!

(Our local version is up too, as it should be.)

This Week At Bungie - January 19

Yesterday was Thursday, so there was (as on most Thursdays) an update from Bungie, on the state of Destiny today. It contains some teasers about an upcoming content update, a warning for cheaters, and more info about Bungie Bounty Days (first mentioned in last  week's update), along with standard TWAB features like an update from the support team and fan-created videos. Go read! We have a local copy, as we usually do, if you're looking for specifics. (We should also mention that our Patch Note Archive was updated earlier this week, with notes from the 2.5.0.1 update that dropped on Tuesday.)

HandmadeCon 2016 - Asset Systems and Scalability

This video was released almost 3 weeks ago, but hey - eggnog can make you groggy! Chris Butcher, Engineering Director at Bungie, gave a talk (well, participated in a one-on-one technical discussion, really) at HandmadeCon this past November, focusing on Asset Systems and Scalability. It's not really aimed at casual viewers; it's pretty technical, and might be boring to folks uninterested in programming. However, if this is your cup of tea, it's FASCINATING, and full of honest evaluation of an aspect of Bungie's workflow for Destiny. If you're interested in some of the differences between Halo and Destiny, under the hood, watch this. Thanks to Cody Miller for finding it. (The discussion on our forum might be of interest, as well.)

Destiny Art Dump

The crew here has been pretty lax over the holidays - but maybe it's time to get back to work? We'll see. In the meantime, there have been a few interesting art-related posts recently; here's a quick recap:

  • nomis78 stopped by a couple of weeks ago with a bunch of panoramas he'd stitched together in Destiny. (The image at the top of this post is one of them.) Take a look - they're quite cool!
  • cheapLEY noticed a collection of Wallpapers over at Imgur (created by SiLeNtWaLkEr) - if you are less bothered than cheapLEY is by the watermarked signature, there are some great screens here!
  • Former Bungie employee Isaac Hannaford recently posted a few new pieces of Destiny concept art on his blog - I love this stuff! (Thanks to Black Six for the heads-up.)
Check this stuff out - art is good, no matter what the US government says.

Coining It In

Stuntmutt sez:

So the gag I wanted to do was Xur saying "If I have 50 3oC's in my inside pocket and 125 in my outside pocket, what do I have?" To which the answer is of course, "Someone else's coat."

But they're back in stock. So...

The Dawning Sunset - and what's left

Bungie, also, wished everyone a Happy New Year - and summarized which parts of The Dawning would remain in play after the mini-event came to a close this past Tuesday. It's a sizeable list! Take a look.

Bite-Sized Backstory - Batch 6

Well, we hope your end-of-year celebrations were epic. (And we hope they're not the last ones ever, but that's another story.) Ragashingo finished up another three installments of his 'Bite-Sized Backstory' series, and we're here to bring them to you. These focus on the more recent conquests of Oryx - and maybe some tie-ins with previous Bungie games. Go give 'em a read!

  1. Oryx's Pyramid Scheme
  2. The End of an Age
  3. Majestic Battles and Waves

This Year At Bungie - 12/15/16

We posted it in our Weekly Update Archive yesterday, but we're just getting around to telling you about the newest summary (This Year, not just This Week) at Bungie.net now. It's not really a look back at 2016... but it's definitely worth a read. There are two pieces of Dawning-related music to download, a reminder about a spotlight on the Localization team you might have missed a few days ago, notes from the Support team, and fan-created videos, along with nice Holiday wishes from DeeJ. Go check it out!

2.5.0: The One About The Dawning

Patch notes for Destiny 2.5.0, the update that brings us The Dawning, are live now (as is the patch, if you log into Destiny). Lots of changes, some big, some small - go read 'em! (There's a copy in our Patch Note Archive, if you'd rather.) As a reminder, that archive is searchable, if you're looking for something specific from the past.

This Week At Bungie - December 8

You'll want to swing by and read this week's update from Bungie (either on Bungie.net or here in our own update archive); it's chock-full of juicy info. Next week The Dawning kicks off, and you'll have 3 weeks to get your fill of Sparrow racing before it goes away again. (Next Wednesday, Bungie will take on Rooster Teeth in a televised SRL-based Bungie Bounty.) Also in the update: new gear available during the event (pretty fun stuff!), a detailed preview of some of the changes coming in the update, and the standard stuff (player support, fan videos). Speaking of fan videos - the Movie of the Week is jaw-dropping. I'm almost embarrassed by the complaining I've done in the past about Bungie's Raid-based jumping puzzles; Epicookiez shows that they're so easy, you can do them on a Sparrow! You gotta watch.

Vicarious Visions is coming to Destiny

This morning, Vicarious Visions (a studio that has worked on Guitar Hero, Skylanders, and Transformers games) announced on Facebook that it was partnering with Bungie to expand the Destiny universe. What that means, exactly, has not been laid out yet... but it's intriguing to think about! Thanks, Korny.
