A Record of the Future

"I met a Guardian in the wastes of Siberia. But she was dead."

"The transmat was down and I needed all the help I could get. With a necessary shame, I took her gun and I took her food and then I said a goodbye with a bitter salute.

"But then I saw her journal. My pack was already full but I would make the room.

"I remembered something Skald once told me. 'We Guardians are already ghosts. We're dead to begin with. What matters is that our actions persist, that our deeds before, during, or after life build towards a future full of Light. That means we must remember and record. Sometimes, the Dark can be stayed with just a memory, a knowledge that what we've done will always have been done.'

"Upon the front endcover and the flyleaf was this drawing:

"I'll transmit more once I reach the wall I can see in the distance - hopefully a place I can rest."

Preview the Pre-Order Prizes

Bungie posted a short video showing off some of the Vanguard gear available to players that pre-order Destiny. If you're not the type that pre-orders games, you might like the disclaimer shown at the bottom of the screen: access to the Vanguard Armory can also be attained through gameplay! Very cool.

Digital Foundry's Beta Hands-On

digitalfoundry.jpgEurogamer's Digital Foundry got down and dirty with the Destiny Beta (using a PS4), and has written up their findings. Their biggest complaint is some judder sensation to lateral camera movement... but according to urk, that might even get fixed before the Beta ends! (Maybe.) Thanks, DaDerga (and uberfoop).

Beta Cutscene Library - Open

The Destiny Beta contains 6 separate 'cutscenes' - we've put together a gallery for those who want access to them. They're streamable, but they're also downloadable (up to 1080p). Swing by and see what's available! Thanks tremendously to Cody Miller for recording these in 7.1 (or 5.1, occasionally) Surround Sound.

Platform comparisons

Now that both the PS3 and PS4 versions of the Beta are live, it's possible to make comparisons; to see how the two generations stack up. Our own Korny whipped up a few GIFs (don't mind the color issues; you're looking at image detail) - there are two in this post, another two in this one, and three over here (the detail differences on the city from a distance are pretty intriguing). And then UnrealCh13f stopped by with a Game Riot video, which shows off the differences in video form. (The beginning, which is all cutscene, is fantastic - it really gives you a sense of what's changed. The second half, which is gameplay, is much harder to parse, since the two runs aren't even remotely similar.) Go check this stuff out! (And keep an eye on Korny's thread - there may very well be more content added.)

I love Bungie fans.

One of the Beta story missions brings you into contact with a broadcast speech - and the language (not surprisingly, since we're in Russia) is Russian. 2good4u2 asked if anyone knew what was being said... and Narcogen not only answered the question, but provided context for the broadcast. Awesome stuff!

Building a Level Playing Field

digital_trends.pngDigital Trends talked to Roger Wolfson about the challenges of building a cross-platform game (and why Destiny will NOT feature cross-platform play). The biggest reason you'll be interacting only with people on the same platform as you're on? It's not technical - it's experiential.

"I'll speak for the hypothetical player," Wolfson explains. "I have a disadvantage sniping across the map because [my opponent with a next-gen console] is only two pixels on my screen and I'm four pixels on his. You see that in the world of PC gaming, where people are always racing to the best video card to give themselves the advantage."

(He's also happy with the way different platforms provide similar gameplay - when he jumps back and forth between a 360 and a PS4, the loading is similar, the action is equally fluid, the enemy count is the same. Graphics are obviously different... but the gameplay translates nicely.) Go read the entire piece! Thanks, Xenos.

A reddit user from Australia who works in an EB Games received some paperwork explaining the scope of the Destiny Beta - get hyped! Thanks, kidtsunami. (If you're worried that this means a large download - you're not alone. bluerunner pointed out the size of the Xbox One version (12.63 GB), and the Playstation 4 version is even larger - 14.3GB. The older-generation consoles will likely have smaller downloads.)

Bees?! No, BEADS.

Perler beads, to be specific. Bungie fan Dwiffo liked Christopher Barrett's 8-bit Guardian sprites enough to make these awesome cube decorations. B-E-A-Utiful!
