We already knew that Issue #257 of Edge magazine would have a Destiny cover story, but now we have a better idea of what to expect from the feature:
With exclusive access to the Seattle studio’s next blockbuster, we have the world’s first hands-on report on the openworld shooter, plus insight from Bungie creative lead Joe Staten, COO Pete Parsons, art director Chris Barrett, technical art director Ryan Ellis and technical director Chris Butcher.
As kapowaz points out, there's a quick teaser online featuring two paragraph-sized quotes from Joe Staten about what Bungie learned from ten years of making Halo games. Good news for people the like long story arcs! The Edge issue will be available for purchase starting this Thursday.
If you haven't been tricked by MoltenSlowa's deceptive forum thread titles yet, you might not be aware that he's been working with community members Padraig, Bones, and Unhh on a Bungie.Org-themed version of the risqué party game Cards Against Humanity. There's still time to submit your own card ideas, but that window closes this week - so get moving! (If you're confused by the concept, this forum post might help clear things up.)
I'm always amazed when someone brings a video game design into the real world through some homemade ingenuity. Twitter user and cross-stitching guru CraftingGeek made a Destiny Tricorn plushie/mini-pillow, and she's giving it away! Check this twitter post to see how you can get your name in the lottery. (Thanks, Hypertrooper/Zeouterlimits.)
Looks like Marty will be traveling across the pond to attend Game Music Connect in London on September 9th! He'll be on the panel of speakers for two sessions: "Soundcard to Symphony" and "Music Machine." Early bird registration for the event is open now. (Thanks, Xenos.)
This week's Mail Sack thread is open for business, and DeeJ has posted a new scenario for you to frame your questions with:
So, imagine you're in a public place, and you find yourself sitting next to someone wearing a Bungie t-shirt. You say "Hey, do you work at Bungie?" He or She says "Yes. I sure do."
Say no more, say no more! Wink wink, nudge nudge: "What's Destiny like?"
Today has been a bit short on Destiny news, so I'll stir the waters a bit with a quick observation: The other day we mentioned Urk's interview with MMORPG.com, but I was intrigued by the shirt he wore in a picture from the article - where had I seen that design before? Presumably the shirt was a Pentathlon uniform, but today I realized the design comes from the enemy name/health markers in Destiny's HUD. Neat!
What gameplay considerations go into building a Destiny level? Who had the most kills in the Bungie Day build of the game? What signature wrestling moves would The Murderblonde employ? All of these questions (and more) are answered in the latest Bungie Mail Sack. Be sure to stop by this photoshop contest thread afterwards - a signed Destiny poster is up for grabs!
Dustin Gagner (known on Bungie.net as Javelin) is back with another gorgeous render of the Hunter model we've mentioned previously, and this time we're treated to a gritty desktop wallpaper. (Full size: 1920x1200) Be sure to stop by Javelin's Bungie.net thread to express your admiration!
Issue 100 of the independent UK magazine "X360" prominently features Destiny on the cover - complete with an absurdly sensationalist headline! The main article within covers the usual post-E3 details (which won't be new to most DBO readers), but the interview with Harold Ryan provide some interesting quotes, at least. This issue is on sale in both print and digital forms from the X360 website. (As always, please refrain from posting scans of paid material on our forum.)
The Guardians of Destiny have released another episode of Guardian Radio - this one has quite a bit Halo content in addition to its regular Destiny content (due to this week's guest, Podtacular's Dust Storm). An interesting listen! Thanks, roland.
We missed this when it was first posted a few weeks ago, but I wanted to highlight this excellent piece of Warlock fan art created by Zukai, a talented artist from the Art & Stuff group (and the subject of a recent Community Focus). You can see the full image in this thread over on Bungie.net. Nice robes!
Das Kalk let us know that Destiny is featured on one of the five possible covers for Game Informer's August issue. You can see the high-res image (and those for the other four games) over at the Game Informer cover gallery. I'm not sure if there's an actual Destiny article in the issue, but the digital and print versions of the magazine should be available now!
The Bungie team finally had a chance to celebrate Bungie Day at the studio with a company-wide playtest of Destiny's co-operative and competitive modes, which means this week's Mail Sack is aglow with tantalizing tidbits of [redacted] chatter. Read on for personal project teases, weird event testimonials, and a cautionary tale from a miserable little pile of secrets. Don't miss the photoshop contest at the bottom - you can win a free Bungie t-shirt! (Thanks, Xenos.)
Remember the minimalist teaser in Edge magazine that electricpirate and kapowaz noticed a couple weeks ago? Looks like they were right about the hints pointing to Destiny - kapowaz has spotted a (tiny) preview image of the upcoming issue's cover. Subscribers will get to read the full story on August 1st, so don't go pillaging your local newstand just yet!
Looking for a new wallpaper? Smyf has you covered with this gallery of classy images created by combining various pieces of official Destiny media. There are some fantastic desktops here, so be sure to check 'em out!
Roland let us know that Episode 20 of Guardian Radio has been released for your listening pleasure. Follow along as the guys from The Guardians of Destiny discuss cryptic mail sacks, poetic ARGs, and pulsating musical teases.
Joystiq reports that this Saturday's Video Games Live concert will be live-streamed by Twitch! According to the schedule, Destiny should be making an appearance around 7:30 PM Pacific. (Thanks, EffortlessFury!)
Will you be in the Seattle area during PAX Prime next month? Want to meet up with some of your fellow DBO community members? I've put together a short questionnaire to help us plan a Public Event or two, so check out the details in this thread, then follow this link to take the survey. See you soon!
Grab your favorite pair of ears and subject them to Episode Two of The Starside Lounge. Four members of the DBO admin team set aside their differences to discuss every Bungie fan's most coveted game: Wreckateer. Somewhere between tales of giant slingshots and crumbling castles, the group manages to sneak in a few Destiny-related thoughts about our Chris Butcher interview, Bungie Week, Jason Jones, fan creativity, and of course: SPACE MAGIC!
(In addition to streaming or downloading from our Starside Lounge page, you can also listen on YouTube and subscribe through iTunes!)
The latest episode of Guardian Radio v.5 is out, distilling a week of news into a quick flurry of highlights. It's about 8.5 minutes long, so give it a listen over at The Guardians of Destiny.
