Eurogamer published an article that provides a detailed look into Destiny's online and social components. Harold Ryan, president of Bungie, has some interesting things to say about what makes Destiny different from an MMO and the technology and ideas powering Destiny's connected experience. This is certainly worth the read especially if you still aren't quite sure what to make of Bungie's new world.
The second technology is an intriguing concept mooted by Ryan, one which I've never heard spoken of before: "social matchmaking". This will be the glue that binds Bungie's game servers to all those locally simulated solo or co-op games running out in the wild. In the process it will turn many thousands of tiny shards into the impression of a single persistent universe - one so big it could, potentially, dwarf Eve Online's New Eden.
Gametrailers is running a 'Best of E3 2013' awards ceremony - Destiny was nominated in the following categories:
Unfortunately Destiny didn't win best new IP or best graphics, but the nominations are still pretty neat. Gametrailers will announce 'Best of Show' today at 4pm PST.
Digitial Foundry posted a video analysis of the Destiny E3 gameplay demo - looks like the game is running at a locked 30fps. That's pretty impressive considering the scale of the game.
UK's The Guardian has an interview with Pete Parsons - it's a fantastic read. Pete's not divulging secrets that Bungie wants kept right now, but he IS discussing some of the bigger issues people are curious about. You'll still have questions after you read it, but you can rest easier knowing that your interests are their interests, too. Thanks, Xenos.
MoreConsole kicked off a fun discussion on our forum with his reminder that a recent Harold Ryan interview mentioned that your in-game Ghost will likely be customizable. Go toss in your own two cents!
E3 2013 was home to many incredible sights, but the Destiny rotunda or 'ronut' experience was probably the most impressive part of the show. The theater provided a sensory overload - air would blast in your face as space ships flew by, the floor would rumble, the screen filled your entire field of view and the audio penetrated your earlobes from every direction. Watch as the Traveler enters our solar system...
If you're interested in just the audio, that's available by itself, as well:
Polygon has posted a short report on Activision's presence at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas and the last paragraph provides an amusing juxtaposition:
This year the company pulled off the golden dream of all licensing agents, a Happy Meal deal with fast-food giant McDonalds. Activision says its big priority for the coming year is tying up some deals for its new franchise, Destiny.
Obviously the two sentences are unrelated, but I wouldn't mind seeing the Hamburglar outclassed by the might of a Fallen captain. What kind of licensing deals will we see emerge from the Destiny universe?
Dean Takahasi, writer for Venturebeat, shared his thoughts one Destiny's E3 reveal. He has a lot of positive things to say, but he also expected a little more from Bungie.
This is one of the tough things about operating an MMO. The technology will eventually start lagging behind single-player games. And when that happens, the MMO has to have its hooks in its players, or it will lose them. I don’t see the hooks yet for Destiny. They might be there, but Bungie has to show them.
Space magic, Dean… space magic.
E3 is over and there are only 19 shopping days left until Bungie Day. If the recent gameplay reveal left a few questions rattling around your skull, be sure to deposit them in this week's Mail Sack thread.
The Guardians of Destiny have not slowed their frenetic podcast pace just because they spent a week in LA - the latest episode actually COVERS that week.. great talk. Mark, Patrick, Chris, Derrick, and Craig take on the highs and lows (mostly highs) of their week in this two-hour extravaganza. Thanks, roland.

Bungie.net user Beau Lamb created this amazing piece of Destiny-inspired fan art that depicts the Dredd-like deadliness of a dual-wielding Titan. Head over to his blog to see the full image and a get a glimpse at how this idea started with just a rough initial sketch.
Nowgamer published an interview with Harold Ryan, president of Bungie, about next generation technology, MMOs and crafting the world of Destiny. There is a particularly interesting statement about giving players a sense of influence and impact in a shared world.
There will be a huge set of discussions to have about the activities you can engage in in Destiny. The designers have the ability to make something an activity that you play through, and they control the frequency that you can play through it, whether you play through it once or multiple times, and they control whether you play it with two or three friends or whether you play it in a public space, where you might encounter it every time you land on Venus as you go through.Go read! (Thanks, Xenos.)
