If you missed the video segment from Bungie's GDC presentation (or want to watch it again), DeeJ has posted the video on the Bungie Blog. (You can also find it on the Bungie YouTube channel.) Press play and drool at the impressive character design!
GameInsider's latest issue is now available in digital form - and amazingly, a digital subscription is free! This is good news for Destiny fans, because the cover story on this issue is... well, about Destiny. Â Go sign up and give it a read! Thanks, Cambone. (Don't let this post distract you from the GDC live stream, happening in just about 2 hours...)
Bungie's GDC presentation, Brave New World: New Bungie IP, will be available for viewing live on Gamespot today at 4:00 p.m. Pacific. Delivered by Christopher Barrett and Joseph Staten, the hour-long presentation will give an insight into the process of designing and building the worlds of Destiny, from concept to production. While the talk is certainly focused toward game developers, many in the community will be interested to peek behind the curtain and catch some new perspectives on Destiny to tease our imaginations and fuel our collective speculation.
The livestream page currently has a countdown, but should automatically update once the session starts. And if you missed it previously, the official bulletin can be found on the GDC session page. Thanks to rliebherr for the Gamespot link reminder in the forum!
There's a new "Breaking In" article up on Bungie.net; this week DeeJ interrogates Jake Lauer, Web Development Engineer about his road to Bungie. Jake works on developing the tools and plumbing that help Bungie.net hum along; I can't wait to see how his work impacts Destiny's web presence!
ncsuDuncan wrapped-up Week 2 and kicked-off Week 3 of the DBO Challenge last night. This week's assignment: Choose a piece of Destiny concept art along with a selection of music, then write a short paragraph or poem to help combine the two. There's also a bonus raffle for two lucky participants this week! We already a number of submissions in the forum, and the deadline is next Tuesday at 6:00 pm EDT, so be sure to submit your selections!
What do you get when you cross Pink Floyd with Destiny? MrPadraig08 knows! He's reimagined the famous Dark Side of the Moon album cover in the vein of Destiny, as both a wallpaper and an album cover for your enjoyment! Very cool.
DeeJ is now fielding questions for this week's Mail Sack over on Bungie.net. It sounds like special attention will be paid to questions for the GDC panel on Thursday evening, so be sure to submit questions after the presentation if you have them.
I'm not sure we're ready to open a Fan Fiction section here on the site yet... but that doesn't stop fans who want to write Destiny Fan Fiction. To wit: Xenos posted a short piece on our forum based on nothing more than the ideas of time-traveling robots... and named weapons. Pretty fun! Go give it a read.
This post by Levi is absolutely worth your time if you have any interest at all in how artists work. He's taken his 'Brothers in Arms' piece (we're using it as our Twitter background) and broken down the creation process - how he laid it out, why certain parts look they way they do, that sort of thing. I'm not an artist - but this fascinated me. And it's full of pretty pictures - well, one pretty picture, in a large variety of forms. (I do have one bone to pick with him - he insults what might be the finest-tasting cola in the US, for no good reason. I forgive him, though, because he draws so amazingly well...) Check it out!
Thanks to Black Six for letting us know that Bungie artist Isaac Hannaford has posted more sketches and drawings from the Emerald City Comic Con. While the work isn't specifically Destiny-related, it's always good to see what the artists are channeling through their talented pens and pencils!
Harpiya was inspired by TDSpiral's Destiny fan art (and Bungie's own work, of course), and stopped by today with a piece of her own - it's gorgeous. Go see.
Guardian Radio is looking for questions to ask Craig Hardgrove, a member of the Mars Curiosity Rover science team and a recent Bungie visitor - pretty cool! Swing by and help 'em out. Thanks, Cambone.
Bungie's latest Mail Sack went live this evening - and it kicks right off with info about their GDC talk next week, including the tantalizing fact that it will be streamed, live, by Gamespot. w00t! That's followed up by a wide variety of questions (and answers) about the game, the studio, and the developers themselves. Absolutely worth a read! Thanks, Xenos.
calcarlson has created some amazing Destiny-inspired sculptures so far - we mentioned his Fallen sculpt two weeks ago, and his Space Zombie a few days later. He's back, with a new writeup in Bungie's Blog today - this time, his focus is a Warlock. If you love this work as much as I do, you might want to join his new group on Bungie.net - it's called Art and Stuff, and it's for artists and art enthusiasts alike! Awesome stuff.
Pick one of your favorite movies and boot up MS Paint - it's time for Week 2 of the DBO Challenge! Visit this thread on our forum for more detailed instructions and be sure to check out the bonus category winners for Week 1's haiku challenge. What are you waiting for? Start drawing!
Bungie has a new Breaking In article on bungie.net. This week DeeJ interviews Digital Matte Artist Isaiah Sherman about his many-faceted role in creating gorgeous and inspiring skyboxes for Destiny (and the road he took to get there).
Guardians of Destiny have released their fourth podcast - discussion focuses on content from the latest Edge magazine, recent patent filings, and this week's Mail Sack. Thanks, Xenos.
OXM UK posted an article summarizing the February press event... all the way back on February 22 (less than a week after Destiny was officially revealed). It contained a plethora of story/universe references that other news outlets missed... and until yesterday, when Mr Daax linked to it, I hadn't even realized it existed! Absolutely worth a read - even if it IS a little old!
Umbra Software will be presenting with Bungie’s Senior Graphics Architect, Hao Chen, at GDC in a session titled "Powering up Destiny’s Level Creation and Rendering with Umbra 3". They've posted a short preview on their company blog in the form of a couple questions with Hao on why Bungie used their technology for Destiny. Give it a read! (Thanks, RiotPelaaha.)
A week ago, we mentioned a movie poster, whipped up by Firestream, to celebrate Destiny, the Movie. Today, Bungie highlighted a new version - same movie, more badass poster!
Go check it out, grab a copy for yourself!Mr Daax on our own forums brought up a very cool TED Talk video regarding the nature of mathematical fractals. The talk itself focuses on the fractal integration of African designs, but there is a particular section (approximately 10:50-14:00) that Destiny fans might find particularly interesting, especially those that involved themselves in the latest Destiny ARG. If you are wondering about geomancy and geomantic symbols, this is a very cool video to check out! Might we see more patterns like this creep up in Destiny's future? We'll see!
OXM UK posted an article detailing some of the reasons Bungie decided to go with both a science fiction and fantasy setting for Destiny.
Fantasy brings us this texture that we can wrap around sci-fi, which is really appealing, especially if you're an artist who's just been stuck making straight up space armour for ten years. A bit of cloth is very refreshing.
The coolest characters always have capes! Thanks, Xenos.
