If you need a quick, ten-minute podcast covering this week's Destiny news, the latest episode of Guardian Radio v.5 should do the trick. Check it out over at The Guardians of Destiny.
Today is Friday, which can only mean one thing: yesterday wasn't Friday and I should have gone to work today. I suppose it also means this week's Mail Sack has been posted over at Bungie.net, so kick back and relax as DeeJ and company allay concerns over Destiny's single-player offerings, privacy controls, and complete lack of guns. (Plus, our DBO Forum gets a shout-out!)
Nzgamer posted an interview with Bungie's Chris Butcher that provides a deeper look into Destiny's connected experience.
One of the things I’ve always loved about Bungie’s games is they have a super-strong sense of community. With Bungie.net starting back in 2003, nearly ten years ago, we had a network of gamers and fans who were all part of the process. They could express what they were doing and what they were feeling. So we’re ensuring we bring these community features into Destiny because before this, they were a bit separate to the game itself. We want to make it the heart of the game. Destiny will be a social community of players, all interacting with each other, experiencing things together, and this is what I’m most excited about with this game. That's one of my favorite things about Bungie's games too! (Thanks, Xenos.)
A+E Interactive has posted a short article comparing the vision behind two next-gen shooters that feature integrated singleplayer and multiplayer components: Destiny and Titanfall. It's a quick read that raises some interesting questions about the future of console shooters, so check it out!
Kotaku's Stephen Totilo wrote up his private walkthrough of the E3 Destiny demo - if you've been following E3 coverage, you likely won't learn TOO much new, but you never know. There are lots of tidbits. Go read!
The Guardians of Destiny have released Guardian Radio Episode 17 - great conversation, a hidden gem from Craig Hardgrove spawned from anger at the Xbox 360, and an amazing discovery by Chris Maselli (see below) - go explore! It's 90 minutes of discussion, with highlights from the recent AusGamers interview of Chris Butcher. (Thanks, roland.)
This puts it in pretty rarified company: only Watch Dogs (with 5 nominations) and Titanfall (with 6, a GCA record) were as honored. Winners will be announced next Tuesday, July 2.
If you preordered Destiny at Amazon, you likely received an email today that included some information about a release date. (marmot 1333 posted the relevant portion on our forum this morning.) Before you get too excited... you should double-check the actual page at Amazon - in includes this tidbit, as well:
So... yeah. Take that June 30 date for what it is - an acknowledgement that it will be out in 2014. Sometime.
The Mirror, a news outlet from the UK, talked to Pete Parsons during E3 - the quotes they pulled out show that Bungie is really looking at the long term picture with this one. There's no "wow, this game was a success - I guess we should make a sequel!" this time around - they've already got their roadmap. Strap in!
Let's catch up on some interesting Destiny press - first up, Digital Trends wrote an article called 'Destiny may actually be as good as you hope it is'. (It came out during E3, but we missed it, and it's a really nice summary of what we might expect, and why there's reason to trust what we haven't seen yet.) Give it a read!
Sometimes DeeJ is on the answering side of a Q&A, and sometimes he's the one asking ze questions. Bungie engineer Jason Minard got a turn in the hot seat for today's Breaking In article, wherein he spilled the beans on how a Philosophy major landed a job testing Destiny's back-end server systems. Give it a read, it's quite inspiring!
We sat down with Chris Butcher during the madness of E3 and asked a bunch of questions that were burning holes in our pockets (and our brains). He answered a lot of them. (Forgive us for the camera focus; our second unit had issues.) Go check it out - and then swing by our forum... if you have further questions, you might just find answers!
Head over to this Bungie.net thread and submit a question for the weekly Mail Sack, then come on back to our own water cooler and impress us with your sagacious inquiry!
That's right - The Starside Lounge podcast is now avalible on iTunes!
Destiny Updates stopped by our forum to announce his analysis of the E3 Gameplay Trailer - he walks through the trailer and points out all sorts of details you may have missed (I know I certainly missed a few). Go watch - and see what speculation inspires YOUR imagination!
Looks like Mark over at The Guardians of Destiny has posted a new episode of Guardian Radio V.5 that condenses a wide variety of news into podcast form. It's a quick ten-minute listen, so be sure to check it out.
The Starside Lounge, the official destiny.bungie.org podcast, recorded its first real episode this week - Grimbrother One, ncsuDuncan, mastrbiggy and I gathered (virtually) to discuss E3 and its sundry offerings. Swing by our new Podcast page to listen or download!
DeeJ and Urk play the part of good cop/bad cop in this high-energy interview that "Angry Joe" shot during E3. Despite the recent deluge of E3 videos, this chat proved to be highly entertaining; check it out! (Thanks again, Xenos.)
Andrew Goldfarb over at IGN has posted a short interview with Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg that gives us this tantalizing quote about Destiny:
It’s a sizeable investment. It’s probably one of the biggest investments in a new IP that’s ever been made in this industry. We wouldn’t be making that investment if we didn’t believe in the potential.
Exciting words for Bungie fans. Check out the full article for Hirshberg's thoughts on how Destiny and Call of Duty will (or won't) compete with each other for an audience.
The first post-E3 mail sack is up! Give it a read and find out what motivates Bungie employees in the aftermath of Destiny's gameplay reveal. Naturally, space magic plays a prominent role.
Pete Parsons spoke to Polygon at E3 (we missed the video - the Destiny segment starts around 30:50 or so.) He discusses loot streams, weapons, ranks, and more. Go watch!
