Who will love a little sparrow?

Did you enjoy your time with Destiny's Sparrows? There are like-minded fans out there you might want to check out, then. VG247 wrote up the nascent Sparrow Racing League (kicked off by those crazy cats at /r/destinythegame), and IGN compiled their Top 5 Ridiculous Sparrow Kills from the Beta (thanks, Avateur). Remember: just because you don't have a gun, doesn't mean you have no offensive power.

Destiny: The People's Champion

ign.png Destiny may not have won any awards from critics or official awards at Gamescom, but it DID win one prestigious award: The People's Choice Award on IGN. Looks like some people are hyped for September 9th!

Newsweek Special Edition

Originally sighted on Twitter, it looks like Newsweek will be putting out an "official collector's edition" magazine focused on Destiny. If it's not already at your local grocery/book store, it should be there tomorrow, August 19th (in the US, at least).

'We're going to grow the universe'

pike_vehicle.pngThe man who's stealing our jobs, Xenos, dropped us a note about TotalXbox.com (a.k.a Official Xbox Magazine)'s talk with Bungie at Gamescom regarding Destiny expansions. Bungie seems to have high ambitions to keep this world living and breathing, from free upgrades to paid-for heaps of content. Go read!

Into the Martian Wastes

Bungie has released a new trailer focusing on the exploration of the Red Planet! SigbiasSilva was the first to sight it on our forums. The video has been localized on DBO's Video Gallery as well (the multiplayer trailer from a few days ago is also up there now, too).

Beta to Better

INSANEdrive wrote up a review of the Destiny Beta recently and filled it with a large number of words. But don't worry, he also included a lot of videos to spice it up, highlighting gameplay, bullet sponges, Brutes, and of course, Indiana Jones... Go see what he thought!

Companion's Little Helper

doom.pngSteelGaribaldi dropped by our forums showing off a spreadsheet he created to help him manage his inventory and equip the best weapons and gear for the right character (apparently everyone doesn't just choose the coolest-sounding name like me). You can snag a copy from him and customize it for your own Guardians. His post will walk you through all the details. Neat!

Out of the Dark

3. "In the morning a scouting party of Dregs was sent down into the dark with me. I saw them pass me by; I'm not sure if they were even looking for me... But they did find something. Green lights in the tunnel up ahead, then red and blue with gunfire and blood.

"I took my chance and skirted my way behind the Dregs as they fired upon their attackers. Were their targets the singers from the night before, molded with with such craven mouths, bony hands, and jagged weapons? Was this the Lunar Hive?

"I did not linger as I discerned a light stemming from a junction in the tunnel not far from my hiding space. First into a creek, then a river, and then into a lake...

"Away of that drome, finally. Must keep moving. Must keep pushing West. Back the way she came.

"I hope she doesn't mind me using her journal. It's filled with maps and warnings... And I found her self-portrait tonight. Awoken - that beautiful curse..."

Timey Wimey... Stuff?

Bluerunner noticed some interesting phrases on PlayStation's Destiny webspace:

So go join Blue in the speculation! I mean I always thought Destiny was going to be big, but "beyond space and time" is going to be really hard on my HDD.

Gamespot Breakdown

Ragashingo posted (and Tweeted at us - the nerve!) a new article at Gamespot that reviews Destiny's Crucible gametypes (Control, Clash, Rumble, Skirmish, Salvage) alongside some new-ish screenshots and renders, not to mention some snippets from Bungie's urk and Derek Carroll. If you're behind, here's an easy way to catch up!

Watch that Warlock High Five

gamingboltlogo.pngJason Sussman talked to GamingBolt about Destiny recently - they covered a lot of ground. (There are also a few transcription issues, so if you read something that makes you think "OMG Bungie never told us about ____" you should take it with a grain of salt.) It's a little older (the Beta is mentioned as 'upcoming'), but still has plenty of relevant info. Read it for great tidbits about background research, explorable space, multiplayer count rationale, and more!

Not Just a Skybox. Sky ART.

The usually gif-tastic Grizzlei highlighted Bungie's "Skywriters of Destiny" article from a few days ago (which I couldn't post about at the time because my dog ate my DBO homework?). So if you haven't already read it, do so, and learn a bit more about what goes into making Bungie's beautiful vistas and gaze on some lovely panoramas. They've come a long way since our first step out of that Bumblebee lifepod, eh? Not to mention the parallax backgrounds of Marathon!

The Traveler Descends Upon Us

exo.pngWayward Spleen let us know that he devised a neat little bookmarklet that lets you know how long we all have before our free time is devastated by Destiny's launch. You'll get the countdown posted on any page you're currently on alongside a Traveler that slowly makes its way to its target as that special day approaches.

Your Guide To The Sol System

Kermit pointed out an Amazon listing for a Destiny Limited Edition Strategy Guidedusk jacket and hardcover bound, complete with lithographs from Bungie, a fold out map, gallery of high-level armor, and you know.... strategy. And if I'm reading it correctly, different versions will come with different covers focused on one of Destiny's three classes.

Details emerge about Paul McCartney's Destiny Doings

A couple of days ago, Missoula radio station KMMS interviewed Paul McCartney (who was in town for a concert) - it's a 12-minute interview, and four of those minutes are devoted to Paul's involvement with Destiny! Amazing. It's a great interview in its entirety, but if you're short on time, the Destiny portion begins at about 6:25. One of the most fascinating tidbits buried in his discussion was the fact that McCartney was asked (and agreed) to contribute an entire song!

Eventually they said, "we'd like a song." So that was exciting, you know, I said, "Okay, show me the ballpark, what's the song going to follow, what's going to happen?" So that was great, and we did that.

(Thanks to Xenos, who noticed this interview at ArcadeSushi.) Hot on the heels of that information, Attack of the Fanboy purports to have a bunch of additional info about this song:

  • It will be released after the game launches
  • It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with a 120-piece orchestra
  • It is focused on the theme of 'Hope'

They don't explain where they got this info... but we'll keep our eyes open and report any new details.

Update: Looks like AotF found this in the New York Times. Huh.

Destiny's Music Direction is Stable

Mike Salvatori has been working on the music for Bungie games for more than 15 years - but his involvement has always been overshadowed by his more public partner, Marty O'Donnell. When O'Donnell left Bungie in April, some fans wondered whether Mike would follow - this week, Rampancy.net reached out to Salvatori's spokesperson for clarification. Good news for fans of the current sound of Destiny - Mike's not going anywhere. Thanks, Narcogen.
