Preload Destiny on Xbox One [Updated]

Looks like Microsoft is going to allow pre-loading on the Xbox One after all! Looking on the Xbox One store you can see the game is now available for digital preorder as well as new text that says:

"Xbox One Game expected to release on 9/9/2014. You may download the game from Xbox Live before then, but it will not be playable until 12:01 AM PDT/3:01 AM EDT on the release date."

Update: Microsoft clarified the preloading and preordering for Destiny: "We're thrilled to make Destiny available for pre-order and pre-download for Xbox One owners around the world. This option was available for a short period of time before the official pre-order window opened. We'll have more details to share soon about the pre-order and pre-download window for Destiny."

Tiny Changes or Large Optimizations

The Playstation Blog recently talked to Jonty Barnes about the Beta and discusses some interesting mindsets they had, especially with how seriously they were taking reactions from the beta and also the kind of things they do plan on changing (or already changed most likely at this point) before release.

Playable Early? Sort-of.

traveler.jpgThe Inquisitor points out the fact that since Bungie announced that the Destiny servers are going live on September 9th on the International Date Line, the game could technically be played before the official US release...if you somehow already have a copy.

(Note: DBO Health and Safety does not advocate breaking street dates.)

Speculation Saturday... On a Tuesday

vex.pngLast Saturday, Ragashingo continued his revival of the Speculation Saturday series of write-ups, this time focusing on the Vex. What do we know already? What can we infer from that? And what crazy, possible conclusions can we jump to? As always, good reads.

How Big?

Gamasutra interviewed Jason Sussman about the art direction of Destiny, and since Bungie's departments work very closely he talks a lot about design and gameplay decisions. (INSANEdrive also pointed it out on the forum)

Destiny Action Figures

DeDerga let us know that ThreeA, one of the companies who has made Halo Action Figures in the past, just announced 1/6 scale Destiny Action Figures! No details at all so far. I'm personally curious about how customizable they'll be given the nature of Destiny.

Playing Catch-Up

In the last couple of weeks there's a been a handful of articles, interviews, and news that have fallen through Vex time portals here at the DBO offices. Let's remedy that, shall we?

  • The International Business Times interviewed urk (Eric Osborne) about multiplayer, how Destiny compares to Halo, and their plans down the road. Thanks to DaDerga.
  • GameInformer verbally investigated Jonty Barnes and Derek Carroll on topics related to the Beta, like the size of levels and fireteams. Xenos was our man in the field.
  • Writer Josh Rubin departed Bungie after working on Destiny for Telltale Games' Game of Thrones adaptions.  "And while there’s a true art to 'writing between the bullets' — as Mr. Staten once said — I couldn’t turn down an offer from Telltale, to create games that are entirely about story." Gamasutra reported on this, Cody Miller let us know about it. May his nights not be "dark and full of terrors" as the Red Woman might say.
  • Forbes posted a speculative article on what Bungie should do with a $500 million budget, if they had one. Thanks goes to Korny.
  • And VG24/7 wrote an article about why Bungie should include Matchmaking for their strategic Raids mode.
Whew! Now to stay on top of things for a bit.

Giving Your Hobby Dimension

If you have access to a 3D Printer (still waiting for them to be renamed Replicators, myself), you can print off your own Duke Mk.44 thanks to Kirby Downey at MyMiniFactory. Thanks to Bluerunner for pointing it out.

On a related note, Mid7night came across a host of models you can order at Shapeways by Brickinator99, including armor and weapons, as well as a mini-Ghost for LEGO-sized figures.

You may have already seen pieces of this, but here's a gameplay video that fell through the news-cracks last week. There's definitely some fun moves in here ready to be recreated in Septemeber!

Thanks, INSANEdrive.

Moving Pictures

CM Roach cobbled together a montage of the animated concept art we've seen sprinkled throughout Bungie videos and set it to some ambient music. Nice way to immerse yourself in the art direction for two minutes. Originally sighted on Reddit by Lord Owen.

Are Raids for You?

There's been some debates on our forums lately about Raids lacking matchmaking. Brenna Hillier over at VG247 wrote an interesting article about why Raiding in Destiny is not for everyone. Obviously won't end any debates, but she makes some interesting points.

Bungie's All In on Destiny

While talking to TotalXbox.com Jonty Barnes cleared up a question a lot of Bungie fans have had about the leaked contract with Activision, namely: is Bungie working on a new Marathon game.

“I think it’s very hard to imagine anything detracting from our focus on Destiny right now, I think we've got really ambitious plans going forward."

The Dark Below

joystiq.pngBefore he was DBO-fied, Xenos let us know that Joystiq posted a little interchange with Bungie's Jonty Barnes, Director of Production, mostly concerning the first Destiny expansion, The Dark Below. There's also a few other details about the Beta, and how Bungie will keep upgrading and growing Destiny consistently as opposed to just releasing it, a few DLC, and moving onto the next project.

We're going to change the game after launch in a frequency that we think makes sense, and that isn't going to be dependent on The Dark Below."
